Tracing a Subject in the UK
When legal documents need to be served but the person you're trying to reach — the “subject” — can't be found at their last known address, a tracing service can help. Skip tracing (or people tracing) uses publicly available records, credit reference data, the electoral roll, and other lawful sources to establish a current, up-to-date address so that service of process can go ahead without unnecessary delay.
Courts expect claimants and petitioners to take reasonable steps to locate a defendant or respondent before applying for alternative or substituted service (for example, service by post to a last known address, by email, or via social media under CPR 6.15). A documented tracing report from a professional is often exactly the kind of evidence a court wants to see.
Common reasons people need tracing
Divorce petitions
Locating a spouse who has moved and cannot otherwise be served with divorce papers.
Debt recovery & CCJs
Finding a debtor's current address to serve a claim form, statutory demand, or enforce a County Court Judgment.
Family & child arrangements
Tracing a parent or family member for child arrangement, maintenance, or contact proceedings.
Landlord & possession claims
Serving notices or possession proceedings on a tenant who has left without a forwarding address.
Injunctions & witness summons
Urgent, time-sensitive service of injunctions, non-molestation orders, or witness summonses.
Wills, probate & beneficiaries
Locating missing beneficiaries or next of kin during probate and estate administration.
What information helps a trace
The more detail you can provide, the faster and more accurate a trace is likely to be. Useful information includes the subject's full name (and any known aliases or maiden names), date of birth, their last known address, and any other addresses, employers, or associates you're aware of. You don't need all of this to submit a request — just provide what you have below.
Your data
Tracing requests are handled in confidence and used only to respond to your enquiry and, where appropriate, to pass your request to a member process server able to assist. We don't sell or share your details for marketing purposes.
